Apple announced that the iPad would be available in the US on April 3rd, slightly later than originally expected (in the January 27th iPad announcement, Steve Jobs stated the iPad would be available in 60 days, which is March 28th). Not a big slip, with rumors suggesting the need for a bit of final software polishing. Certainly the new Apple baby looked sweet in the Oscars commercial.

For those of you worried about the iPad selling out, Apple has a solution. Starting on March 12th, US customers can pre-order both WiFi and the WiFi+3G models from the Apple Online Store or reserve a WiFi model for pickup on April 3rd in an Apple retail store. I guess I won’t need my tent and folding chair after all.

A lively collection of iPhone developers, designers and mobile application enthusiasts of all stripes gathered at the upper east side home of CodeFab CEO Alex Cone to meet and greet and to watch the streaming keynote from California. The video was streamed to the iPhone Simulator on the desktop of the media center mac in the living room and watched on the big screen tv. Despite the unusual format, the broadcast went flawlessly (thanks LexTech!)

The general consensus was that Chi-Wha Chen’s pitch wasn’t aimed at the gathered crowd:1 in ~50,000 ideas submitted get funded by iFund, circa $10 million investments, co-locate in California (that last a deal breaker for most New Yorkers!). But it did spark an energetic discussion on game-changer innovation in the mobile space and what it might look like.

Breaking up at around 11:00, the conference attendees were eager to return saturday to get started on the hacking. A great collection of people from all areas of the community signed up and it should be a great “un-conference”!!
