CodeFab WebObjects/iPhone Chili Cook-Off at Alex Cone’s House

On Saturday June 28th, Alex Cone will host the second annual CodeFab WebObjects Chili Cook-Off! This event is designed to bring together Apple geeks who develop using WebObjects (and this year we add iPhone developers too!) with connoisseurs of spicy food for a no-holds-barred, knock-down, drag-out chili cook-off that will smoke the surface of your tongues right off and do more psychic damage than the famed Guatemalan Insanity Pepper.

Alex will throw a batch or two to get things rolling - Chicken Mole? Chili Verde? - plus a batch of his famous Habenero Cornbread. An asbestos taste-bud mandatory rematch with last year’s winner Bojan will be sure to entertain all.

Email Alex Cone if you want to be a judge. To compete just bring your best batch of chili (a batch for about 20 people is a good start). There is a big stove, so you can get time to reheat and tune your spices the day of the cook-off.

Donations of beer, wine, sodas and anything else to cool the tongue definitely appreciated.

The party starts at 7:00 and cooks needing some time can come earlier.

WebObjects Developer Conference Coming Up!

The WebObjects fire started last year at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference continues to rage unabated. Get all the latest information and developer tips and tricks at the 2008 WOrld Wide Web Objects Developer Conference in San Francisco June 7th and 8th.

CodeFab’s Alex Cone and Bill Hatch will be speaking on Sunday, giving the low-down on the latest AJAX support in WebObjects 5.4. The session is (*gasp!*) at 9:00 am, so don’t party to hearty on Saturday night. The full schedule is here.

Hmmm… Git looks interesting

Having lived through pushing most of our code from CVS to Subversion, I’m not really planning on moving to a new version control system any time soon. None the less, a new system (OK - new to me) called Git looks interesting and I thought I would do a quick post and push out some links.

Best place to start is an excellent Google TechTalk by Randall Schwartz that can be found here. More information at Wikipedia here and at the official site.

I like the fact that you typically have the entire repository locally and that you can submit patches by email. Enjoy!

Ron Perkey’s mother’s Chicken and Dumplings

If you guys like good country food this recipe of my mother’s is great! Note for the lazy: I have a sister that uses canned biscuits instead of making the dough.

Chicken and Dumplings

Put the roasting chicken (hen) in a big pot with lots of water and season it with chicken bouillon. Let it cook until it is tender then take it off the bone and remove the skin. Keep the broth for the dumplings.

Put about 4 to 5 cups self rising flour in a large bowl. Mix some of the hot broth in and be sure you get some of the fat from the broth. Add broth until it is just moist enough to stick together. Roll the dough out using lots of flour until the dough is very thin. Next, cut the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide.

Make sure the broth is boiling hot then add a can of evaporated milk to the broth. Taste it to see if it needs salt and if it does, add more chicken bouillon in place of salt. While the broth is boiling, drop the dumplings in. Let them boil for a couple of minutes then put on the lid and remove it from the heat and let it sit. If you let them cook they will get tough. I never stir the dumplings because this makes them break so just toss them with a spoon.

We Will Miss You Greg Dawson

Gregory Dawson, a friend of mine for many years and a friend of CodeFab’s, has passed on. Greg was surrounded by friends and family today when he and the doctors decided the time had come. We will all miss him very much.

Greg had a rich and varied life, producing theater, radio and television, as well as the cabaret at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in New York. He was also the creative force and founding partner for the trend setting New York cabaret and restaurant The Ballroom in the 1980’s.

Greg was an artist and sculptor his whole life, with a prodigious and amazingly varied output. He achieved a cult status in the 80’s and 90’s with elaborate tableaux of tiny sculpted wax and clay figurines, many depicting the wild side of New York night life of the era. His recent work has been a joyful explosion of constructivist abstract sculpture and paintings which can be viewed at his website DaWsoNWoRK.

CodeFab announces iPhone-dev: a new iPhone developer mailing list

CodeFab releases WOiPhoneStore: iPhone web store sample code

In conjunction with a presentation given at OpenBase Developer Summit 2007 CodeFab has developed an example WebObjects framework that demonstrates how to construct web-based application user interfaces for display on Apple’s new iPhone web browser. The framework demonstrates some best practices for use of HTML, CSS3, JavaScript and AJAX to create an attractive and responsive interface for your application. This framework can be used as is to add hierarchical product browsing to any existing WebObjects-based store.

CodeFab releases WOGoogleCheckout: XML WebServices sample code

In conjunction with talks given at WOrld WebObjects Developers Conference 2007 and OpenBase Developer Summit 2007 CodeFab has developed an example WebObjects framework that uses XML web services to implement Google Checkout for processing e-Commerce transactions using Google and their new service based API. This framework can be used as is to add Google Checkout processing to any existing WebObjects-based store.
